In Memory of Robert (Bob) Corell (1934-2024)

Published on February 18, 2025

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Corell, a distinguished climate scientist and a steadfast supporter of IIASA.

Bob was internationally recognized for his immense contributions to climate science, particularly in understanding the rapid changes occurring in the Arctic for which he served as the Chair of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA). He played a pivotal role in highlighting the consequences of climate change in this region and its far-reaching global effects. Throughout his career, Bob worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between science and policy, holding critical positions in academia, government, and nonprofits, including the University of New Hampshire, the National Science Foundation, the American Meteorological Society, the Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Bob was a driving force in support of IIASA as a center of international collaboration and dialogue. As NSF Assistant Director for Geosciences, he played a key role in the resumption of U.S. Government support for IIASA in 1992. He served on the Council of IIASA’s Global Energy Assessment from 2007-2012, and then continued to support IIASA’s work as a member of the US NMO Committee and the Board of Directors of the Friends of IIASA. He continuously championed interdisciplinary approaches to tackling environmental challenges and left a lasting mark on the scientific community and beyond.

"Bob Corell was a leading voice in climate science and a steadfast champion of connecting research with policy. His influence extended far beyond his own work, shaping how we understand and respond to the pressing challenges of climate change; then and now. We will honor his memory by continuing the work that he was so passionate about.", reflects IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire IIASA’s mission to advance solutions for global environmental challenges.
